What Is 'Xbox Mode'? New Windows 11 Feature Is Coming Soon Amid New Console Talks

Xbox Mode is set to take over Windows 11 gaming.

Microsoft has announced the "Xbox Mode" feature for Windows 11, which will be made available in select regions in the coming weeks.

The latest feature's introduction came alongside Microsoft's announcements at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), where they also talked about their next-gen console, Project Helix.

Windows 11's Xbox Mode Unveiled in GDC 2026

Xbox's vice president of next generation, Jason Ronald, shared during the GDC that massive gaming experiences are coming to the different Xbox platforms, and this includes Windows 11 PC gaming.

Xbox Mode is a feature that the company has developed for handheld consoles, particularly for the ROG Xbox Ally platform. The team said that an early version was debuted for the ROG Xbox Ally, and now, they are taking this to the Windows 11 platform with a focus on a full-screen and controller experience.

"Xbox mode lets players seamlessly switch between productivity and play, with a familiar full screen and controller optimized Xbox experience while embracing the openness of Windows," said Ronald.

The Xbox executive revealed that the team will roll out the Xbox Mode to Windows 11 starting next month, and it will be available to select markets in its initial availability.

There are no specific dates and markets in this announcement from Xbox as of press time.

Xbox Mode, Project Helix, and Microsoft Gaming

Xbox Mode will deliver a massive change in the gaming experience in Windows 11-powered PCs, particularly as it will replicate the console setup to the computer gaming platform.

Alongside this, Xbox has talked significantly about its next-generation console codenamed Project Helix.

Here, the company confirmed that an alpha version of the console is coming next year, powered by a custom AMD SoC hardware.
