'League of Legends' WASD Movement Controls Are Coming to Ranked Matches in Next Patch

Ranked matches are getting the WASD control option for summoners.

Riot Games is adding an accessibility feature to the ranked mode of "League of Legends," following its introduction of WASD controls last year on normal modes.

The WASD scheme offers mobility controls in action shooter games, including first-person shooters (FPS) and third-person shooters (TPS), where the keys are designated for movement while the mouse is meant for the attack, direction, and more.

'League of Legends' Is Adding WASD Controls to Ranked

Riot Games has officially announced that WASD controls are coming to ranked play in "League of Legends." This alternate option, allowing players to traverse the rift by keyboard rather than by mouse, is rolling out to ranked matches in patch 26.9.

Riot confirmed the milestone in a new devlog, saying that "After extensive testing, analysis, and adjustments, we've gotten to a point where WASD has reached a similar performance level as Point and Click controls."

Riot first announced that it was pursuing support for WASD controls in August 2025. The studio said it wanted to ensure that the alternate control scheme wasn't more powerful than point-and-click movement.

From there, WASD went through PBE testing, then was slowly introduced into non-ranked modes before its full global release, including ranked and pro play.

Here's What to Expect From 'WASD' Controls on 'LoL' Ranked

The WASD controls on "League of Legends" ranked are coming with several noteworthy details for players to know going in.

According to the devlog, there is still a small delta in the win rates between the control schemes, with Point and Click having a minor advantage. Riot expects that difference will decrease over time as players gain more mastery with WASD, and the company will continue to monitor the stat.

Riot also ran blind surveys to measure game feel. Players were generally unable to detect what control scheme was being used by their opponent.

In addition, patch 26.9 also brings other updates. Champion-specific keybinds are being introduced, allowing players to customize settings per champion for both Point and Click and WASD.

This accessibility improvement is not adding support for controllers or gamepads, but Riot said that players may use a joystick for the WASD controls.
