Eric Barone, widely known as ConcernedApe, continues balancing multiple major projects as development on "Haunted Chocolatier" accelerates. While still supporting "Stardew Valley" through ongoing updates and anniversary celebrations, Barone recently revealed that his next game is evolving into a much larger experience than many fans initially expected.
The indie developer explained that he now spends most of his workweek focused on "Haunted Chocolatier," while reserving the remaining time for "SV" updates and community engagement.
'Haunted Chocolatier' Features Larger Maps and Deeper Gameplay

Barone recently told GameInformer that "Haunted Chocolatier" already surpasses "Stardew Valley" in several key areas, including map size, monster variety, item systems, and overall gameplay complexity.
According to the developer, nearly every gameplay mechanic has been "cranked up," suggesting the project will deliver a deeper and more feature-rich experience than his previous hit farming simulator.
The game is also expected to introduce expanded equipment systems and more detailed progression mechanics.
While "Stardew Valley" focused heavily on farming, relationships, and peaceful daily routines, "Haunted Chocolatier" appears to lean more on exploration, combat, and mystery-driven gameplay.
Darker Themes Separate the Game From 'Stardew Valley'
Barone also discussed the tonal differences between the two games, explaining that "Haunted Chocolatier" will embrace darker and creepier themes compared to the cozy atmosphere of "Stardew Valley."
"I'm interested in exploring a darker theme, a darker atmosphere. The ghosts, the haunted nature, the castle, allow for a lot of interesting, creative things that I can do that are kind of creepy, like not totally horrifying, but maybe slightly, you know, creepy stuff."
Set inside a haunted castle, the game will feature ghosts, unsettling environments, and supernatural storytelling elements. However, Barone clarified that the project is not intended to become a traditional horror game.
The developer explained that the setting gives him more creative freedom to explore mysterious and eerie ideas that may not have fit naturally within Stardew Valley's grounded world.
ConcernedApe Criticizes AI in Creative Development
During the interview, Kotaku reported that Barone also shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence in creative industries, describing AI as "a soulless machine."
He emphasized his desire to create games that feel magical and emotionally meaningful for players.
According to Barone, books, movies, and games inspired similar feelings of wonder during his childhood, and he hopes "Haunted Chocolatier" can recreate that emotional connection for modern audiences.
