Nutifood’s USPTO Patent Reflects Vietnam’s Growing Push into Global Nutritional Science

By securing a USPTO patent for its proprietary FDI Formula, Nutifood is making a broader statement about Vietnam’s ambitions in the global nutrition industry.

As consumer demand shifts toward clinically positioned and science-backed nutrition, companies are increasingly competing on research, formulation, and intellectual property. Nutifood's latest milestone suggests Vietnamese brands are beginning to enter that race.

USPTO Recognition Carries Strategic Weight

Nutifood announced that its FDI Formula, developed by the Nutifood Nutrition Research Institute in Sweden, has officially been granted patent protection by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The formula combines 2'-FL HMO, an oligosaccharide naturally found in breast milk, with FOS, a soluble fiber associated with digestive health. According to the USPTO's assessment, the formula's proprietary ratio and clinical evaluation system helped establish its scientific differentiation.

"Nutifood FDI Formula being granted a patent by the USPTO is evidence of Nutifood's serious commitment to investing in nutritional science research," said Mr. Tran Bao Minh, Vice Chairman of Nutifood.

The recognition carries strategic significance in a global nutrition industry increasingly shaped by premium, science-backed products, and functional health claims. Widely regarded as one of the world's most rigorous intellectual property systems, the USPTO evaluates inventions against stringent standards for novelty, utility and real-world applicability. Established in 1790, the office has granted more than 12 million patents and operates with over 13,000 technical, legal, and examining professionals.

Beyond legal protection in the U.S. market, the patent also strengthens Nutifood's positioning as it expands internationally, offering a level of scientific credibility that few emerging-market nutrition brands have achieved.

Intellectual Property as Competitive Strategy

The USPTO reflects Nutifood's broader shift from traditional product manufacturing toward a research-led growth strategy.

That transition has become increasingly visible through the development of the FDI Formula, which over the past five years has become the nutritional foundation across Nutifood's GrowPLUS+ portfolio. Built around optimized formulations tailored to children's nutritional needs and developmental stages, the product line has helped strengthen the company's position in Vietnam's pediatric nutrition market.

Nutifood's science-first approach also aligns with broader shifts across the global nutrition industry. As consumers place greater emphasis on functional nutrition and evidence-based health benefits, proprietary research has become an increasingly important competitive advantage.

Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Hoang Minh echoed that view, noting that science, technology, and intellectual property are becoming core drivers of competitiveness in the global economy. According to him, the USPTO patent granted to Nutifood's FDI Formula demonstrates that Vietnamese enterprises are fully capable of creating scientifically valuable products that meet international standards and gradually integrate more deeply into the global market through proprietary technologies.

A Broader Shift In Vietnam's Dairy Industry

Alongside the USPTO patent, Nutifood announced the establishment of Nutifood America-Nutrition Science.

Ms. Melissa A. Brown, U.S. Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, recognized Nutifood's efforts to expand cooperation with leading U.S. partners. She noted that scientific initiatives and commercial collaboration between Vietnamese and U.S. enterprises would contribute to fostering innovation while strengthening bilateral economic ties.

The new brand is built on the proprietary Nutifood FDI Formula patented by the USPTO, integrating advanced U.S. nutritional science and technology, utilizing premium A2 protein sourced from purebred A2 dairy herds and essential nutrients. Nutifood America-Nutrition Science aims to develop premium A2 GrowPLUS+ formula nutrition product lines to meet consumers' growing nutritional demands.

Founded over 25 years ago, Nutifood has operated manufacturing facilities and research institutes across Vietnam, Sweden, and Australia, with partnerships including BASF, DuPont, and DSM-Firmenich.

The USPTO patent marks a significant milestone in that evolution—one that could help elevate Vietnam's presence in the global nutritional science industry.
