Samsung One UI 9 Redesign Removes Manual Lockdown Mode For Faster Emergency Phone Security

The Lockdown mode will now be automatically enabled.

Samsung's upcoming software update, One UI 9, brings a major change to smartphone security during emergencies.

The update removes the traditional manual "Lockdown Mode" button from the power menu and replaces it with an automated system designed to activate more quickly and intuitively.

For years, Galaxy devices included a Lockdown Mode option that users could manually enable. This feature disabled fingerprint and facial recognition, requiring a PIN, pattern, or password for access. However, it was rarely used in practice, as many users either overlooked it or forgot it existed.

According to early beta reports and discussions within the r/oneui community on Reddit, One UI 9 Beta 2, based on Android 17, has redesigned the power menu interface.

Instead of displaying a dedicated lockdown toggle, Samsung now prioritizes emergency access features such as medical information, which can assist first responders in critical situations.

Lockdown Mode Now Activates Automatically

Although the visible toggle has been removed, the lockdown function itself has not been eliminated. Instead, Samsung has integrated it into system behavior.

Under the new design, lockdown mode activates automatically when the user opens and dismisses the power menu.

Once triggered, all biometric authentication methods, including fingerprint and facial recognition, are immediately disabled. From that point forward, the device can only be unlocked using a PIN, pattern, or password.

This change removes the need for manual activation, reducing the risk of users forgetting to enable security features during high-stress situations.

Focus on Faster and More Reliable Protection

According to Digital Trends, the redesigned system aims to streamline emergency security by turning a routine action: opening the power menu, into a trigger for protection. This approach reduces user error and ensures that security measures activate instantly without requiring additional steps.

Supporters of the update argue that it improves safety by lowering cognitive load in critical moments, while others may prefer the flexibility of manually controlling when lockdown is enabled.

Still in Beta Testing Ahead of Global Release

One UI 9 is currently in beta testing and may still change before its global rollout. Samsung is expected to refine the feature based on user feedback before finalizing the stable version of the update.
