After being in "stealth mode" for the last two and half years, Springpath finally unveiled its Springpath Data Platform on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

The data platform, which the company touts is the first-ever hyper-convergence software solution, imbibes enterprise-grade features at an annual low-cost subscription.

The Springpath Data Platform is a unique software-based platform that allows standard servers that host a wide variety of applications to store and manage data securely by affording clients the company's signature Hardware Agnostic Log-structured Objects (HALO) architecture. The HALO architecture is designed to deliver exemplary data services, superior performance, efficient storage and scalability.

The controller software of the Springpath Data Platform works across nodes on the Ethernet. The distributed file system of the HALO architecture offers inline deduplication and compression, built-in support for snapshots and clones, and automated rebalancing.

The software platform has been operating covertly since May 2012 and Springpath has $34 million in funding from several investors. The company's founders Mallik Mahalingam and Krishna Yadappanavar are VMware veterans and it was formerly called Storvisor.

"Today's data centers are forced to choose inflexible and expensive silos of dedicated appliances, converged systems and arrays to meet their data storage needs," revealed Mahalingam, Springpath's CEO, CTO and co-founder. "Modern data centers require a versatile and elastic data platform software that runs on a common hardware infrastructure based on standard servers and supports the data management needs of virtualized, containerized, big data and other emerging environments."

In January, the Springpath Data Platform for VMware vSphere became available for a subscription of $4,000 for each server per year for each end-user. Prior to that, it was in beta for a year.

The software platform, which has the "Independent Infrastructure" approach as its USP, is compatible with several server models, including those from Dell, Supermicro, HP and Cisco. The upcoming platform is used by over 24 customers currently for a wide variety of requirements.

In a bid to extend its reach, the company has tied up with Tech Data for distribution. Because of the agreement with Tech Data, data storage solution providers will be able to access servers that come pre-loaded with Springpath's software. This process in turn would fuel a seamless and swift distribution cycle.
