Finally, after years of waiting, Konami has revealed the official worldwide release date for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It's been a long time since the game was first revealed, and the fact that The Phantom Pain would be released in 2015 was enough to drive fans up the wall. That being said, there are still quite a few questions about Metal Gear Solid V's launch that have yet to be answered.

One such question was how The Phantom Pain would tie into its prequel, Ground Zeroes. Konami confirmed that save data from Ground Zeroes would transfer to The Phantom Pain upon release, it just never specified what exactly that meant.

Players weren't even sure which console they'd be able to transfer the data to, much less what it would unlock. Thankfully, Konami has finally answered those questions via infographic:

Save data transfers are nothing new to gaming, and cross-generation transfers have become a major trend over the last year or so. Games like Grand Theft Auto V and Diablo III have allowed players to bring save data over to new consoles, and Metal Gear Solid V is no different.

The only real limitation is that save data must be transferred within the same console family. For example, if you played Ground Zeroes on the PlayStation 3 or 4, then the save data transfer to The Phantom Pain will only work on those consoles. There's no way to transfer between a PlayStation and Xbox, or vice versa - it's a similar system to the one that Grand Theft Auto V used. There's also no way to move backwards (i.e., PS4 to PS3), though it's hard to imagine that anyone would want to do so.

As was the case with Grand Theft Auto V, there are also bonuses for those who bring save data in from one game to another. In The Phantom Pain, any soldiers who were captured in Ground Zeroes will become available in Mother Base, and the exclusive 'Sneaking Suit' will be unlocked as well. Finally, players will be able to return to Camp Omega (the setting of Ground Zeroes) for 'something cool,' though Konami hasn't specified what this could be.

Upon release, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes was far from a universal success: while many praised the gameplay and stealth mechanics, most claimed that Konami was essentially charging fans to play a tech demo. Though the save data transfer doesn't solve any of those issues, it is nice that Konami is rewarding loyal fans with a little something extra.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set for worldwide release on Sept. 21.
