When it was first announced, Gotham was a huge hit with fans. Then, it was announced that some major characters' backstories would be rewritten, and the fans went nuts.

Once the show itself aired, everyone seemed to love it. Batman on television has never been a surefire success, and at first, Gotham was in the same boat — now, with most of the show's first season behind us, most people can agree that the show is better than anyone expected.

With just a few episodes left, Fox is getting ready to start ramping things up: the entire first season of the show was dedicated to building the lore of Gotham City, and now, it's time to capitalize on it. There are only four episodes left before the season one finale, and if the latest trailer is anything to go by, Gotham's going out with a bang:

Who would have thought that a Batman spin-off without the Dark Knight himself would be so successful? Not only that, but the show has managed to build its own story from the ground up — sure, there are plenty of Batman characters in the show, but most have had their backstories completely rewritten.

While that might sound like a bad thing, it made the show that much more approachable: comics can be so hard to get into simply because of the years and years worth of lore, but Gotham got around all of that by creating its own universe. As a result, it's one of the most approachable comic book spin-offs in recent history.

Now, the big question is: will Gotham end on a high note? With so many interconnected threads, it could be too much for the studio to handle, and having the season extended halfway through couldn't have been easy on the writers. Now that Gotham's second season has been confirmed, the only thing the producers have left to do is craft a finale that satisfies the fans.

There are still four episodes left to go, but the end is near: Gotham returns to Fox on April 13.
