At this point, one thing has been made exceptionally clear: Half-Life 3 is not coming anytime soon.

In the decade (yes, decade) since Half-Life 2's initial release, fans have been desperately hoping for a sequel to one of the best first-person shooters ever made.

The game's two episodic sequels, while great games on their own, didn't help matters - Episode Two's dramatic cliffhanger ending only made the wait for a proper sequel even worse.

Valve has been silent for years, only claiming that the game will be made when the team wants to work on it.

Basically, if Half-Life 3 happens, it won't be for a while - thankfully, a new fan-made mod may help satiate players' appetites for a true sequel to Half-Life 2:

Transmissions: Element 120 takes place after the events of Half-Life 2: Episode Two, though other story details are somewhat vague. What players do know is that the mod comes stocked with new character models, weapons, environments and graphical enhancements.

On top of all that, the Gravity Gun has gotten an upgrade: it's not just about lifting and throwing anymore. Players can use the new tools to increase the height of their jumps or dampen otherwise lethal falls, and you can bet that Transmissions will incorporate the new gravity mechanics throughout its campaign.

The best part about Transmissions: Element 120? Not only is the mod free to play, but it's actually available now via the team's official site. Be warned: in its current unofficial state, actually installing the mod may take a bit of work. If you're not interested in rifling through your computer's folders and setting up everything manually, there's also a Steam Greenlight page for Transmissions - there's still no word on when the mod could officially make its way to Steam, but if it does, it'll be infinitely easier to install.

Will gamers ever get a true sequel to Half-Life 2? Who knows - at this point, Valve doesn't seem to be in any sort of rush to make one. However, if enough fans were to come together and make it happen, there's a chance that Half-Life 3 could still happen: after all, if Transmissions: Element 120 can be made in someone's spare time, who's to say that the same can't be done for Half-Life 3?

To play Transmissions: Element 120, you'll need a working copy of Half-Life 2 - otherwise, you can simply download it from the mod's official site.
