The Halo 5: Guardians hype machine is in full swing. In addition to two live-action teaser trailers, 343 Industries and Microsoft are continuing to give Halo fans something to chew on with the "Hunt the Truth" viral marketing campaign.

What exactly is "Hunt the Truth?" It's a Serial-style podcast hosted by fictional journalist Benjamin Giraud, who is diving into the history of the Master Chief and attempting to distinguish between what is fact and what is fiction. Since we know Halo 5's story involves Master Chief being on the run from fellow super soldier Spartan Locke, expect this fictional government conspiracy rabbit hole to go deep.

Last week Giraud examined the relationship between Master Chief and Spartan Locke, providing a few teases as to what we can expect when the two cross paths in Halo 5 later this year. This week's episode focuses specifically on Master Chief's mysterious origins. We know Chief's real name, John, but beyond that not much is known about his early childhood. Not officially, anyways. As the Spartan program that turned the Chief into the super soldier he is today is shrouded in secrecy, the Chief's origins aren't common knowledge.

The Spartan program's creator, Catherine Halsey, was arrested at the beginning of Halo 4 for her role in the Spartan program. She slowly turned into a villain over the course of Halo 4's Spartan Ops storyline, and can now be seen on the side of the Covenant in the ongoing Halo comic series from Dark Horse Comics.

That information leads directly into Giraud's investigation this week, which kicks off with a big revelation that sounds shocking at first, but actually won't be a surprise for those who have read some of the various Halo novels and comics. We won't surprise it for you here, so be sure to give the podcast a listen below.

You can listen to episode of Hunt the Truth on Soundcloud or on iTunes. Halo 5 releases on Oct. 27 for Xbox One.
