True, everyone loves watching superheroes ... but if there's one thing that the Joker taught us, it's that people love watching the villains just as much. Over the course of the last seven years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done a great job of adapting a litany of different comic book heroes for the big screen — and, while not every villain has made the jump unscathed, the vast majority of the villains hit the nail right on the head.

Since fans are only a few weeks away from finally seeing Avengers: Age of Ultron, it's about time to take a look back — not at the heroes or the movies themselves but the villains. After all, what's a superhero without a supervillain? Granted, we weren't able to include Ultron on this list, as the movie isn't out yet — aside from the robotic menace, everyone else is up for grabs.

So, without further adieu, the Top 10 Marvel Cinematic Universe villains:

#10: Thanos

First Appeared in: The Avengers

Thanos is only #10 on the list because ... well, he hasn't actually done anything. Sure, he was behind the New York attack in The Avengers, and is the reason that Ronan the Accuser knew about the Infinity Gems, but aside from sitting menacingly on a throne, Thanos hasn't done much of anything ... yet.

#9: Aldrich Killian

First Appeared in: Iron Man 3

It's easy to be disappointed with Killian — after all, Iron Man 3 was marketed as Tony Stark vs. the Mandarin, and all fans got was some businessman with fire breath. However, his backstory is enough to get him onto this list, as he's basically a direct result of Tony Stark being ... well, Tony Stark.

#8: The Chitauri Army

First Appeared in: The Avengers

To put it bluntly, the Chitauri Army changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor proved that life existed on other worlds, and the Chitauri proved that not all of these aliens are friendly. The effects of the attack on New York rippled throughout the entire Cinematic Universe, even continuing throughout the second Avengers film.

#7: Ronan the Accuser

First Appeared in: Guardians of the Galaxy

Sure, he didn't get all that far in his plan for galactic domination, but Ronan the Accuser is one of the few beings to ever control an Infinity Gem on his own ... and survive. Were it not for the intervention (and sick dance moves) of the newly-formed Guardians of the Galaxy, Ronan's power could have been enough to challenge Thanos himself.

#6: Whiplash

First Appeared in: Iron Man 2

Yes, the ending of Iron Man 2 was a bit anti-climactic, but Whiplash (otherwise known as Ivan Vanko) was the first real threat Tony Stark ever faced. He came out of nowhere and his technology rivaled the Iron Man suit — sure, he was a bit too quiet and was defeated by a bro-powered high-five, but before that, Whiplash was one of the biggest threats Iron Man ever faced.

#5: The Red Skull

First Appeared in: Captain America: The First Avenger

The Red Skull isn't on this list simply because he was a borderline-psychotic Nazi commander with ancient Asgardian technology on his side, but because he is the perfect example of how to make an outlandish comic book villain work in a live-action movie. He's a character with a bright red skull and no face — and yet, the team behind the first Captain America movie somehow made it work. Bravo.

#4: Abomination

First Appeared in: The Incredible Hulk

Few villains are as powerful as the heroes they face off against, and even fewer can compare to the strength of the Hulk. The Abomination manages to do both, and it's easy to imagine the kind of wanton destruction he could have caused if he hadn't been captured by SHIELD. Blonsky is still out there (he's been referenced to multiple times on Agents of SHIELD), so perhaps we haven't seen the last of him.

#3: Hydra

First Appeared in: Captain America: The First Avenger

Yes, Hydra was a military force in World War II, but it wasn't until the organization infiltrated SHIELD that it became a true threat. Arnim Zola's infiltration and subsequent corruption of the organization turned everything about SHIELD on its head — but, more importantly, it planted the seeds of distrust in Captain America.

#2: The Winter Soldier

First Appeared in: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Yes, the Winter Soldier is a close, personal friend of Captain America, it's one of the things that makes him so compelling — but what's even more interesting is that they're essentially two sides of the same coin. Everything went right for Steve Rogers, and everything went wrong for Bucky Barnes — had the circumstances been even a little different, the story would have changed, and that's what makes the Winter Soldier so tragic.

#1: Loki

First Appeared in: Thor

As it stands, no one has had more influence over the Marvel Cinematic Universe than Loki. Yes, he was following orders from Thanos during the events of The Avengers, but without Loki, most of the major stories in the Cinematic Universe never happen. He's also got the closest connection with the God of Thunder himself — meaning that, no matter what, Loki can't be permanently dealt with. He's the worst case scenario for the Avengers ... and that's what makes him such a fantastic villain.

So, will Ultron dethrone Loki as the greatest Marvel movie villain ever? Will Thanos live up to his massive reputation when Infinity Wars Pt. I and II finally hit theaters? Will anyone ever remember who the Destroyer is?

While no one knows what will happen to Thanos, it won't be long before fans can finally see Ultron in action: Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1.
... And no — nobody will ever remember who the Destroyer is.
