"Spring brings allergy problems for people with sensitive skin," says Dr. Richie Lin M.D., Board Certified Dermatologist, when we spoke to him.

Dr. Lin recommends spring cleaning your household and body care products and switching to more natural-based ones with fewer fragrances and dyes. "Antihistamines, often taken with cases of allergies, can actually dry out the skin. Be sure you use a moisturizer often and stick with creams over lotions."

Dr. Lin notes, "What you put in your body can affect how you look on the outside. Be sure to drink plenty of water to flush your body, and this can also help reduce puffiness." Dr. Lin is based out of Short Hills Dermatology in Short Hills, NJ.

Before popping an allergy pill, however, try the following natural cures for congestion:

Neti Pot

If you've never tried a neti pot, your sinuses are most likely suffering. Rather than reaching for a steroid-based inhaler, opt for this ancient form of nasal irrigation. Fill the vessel with distilled warm water and salt, angle the head to one side and insert the tip of the neti pot into the opposite nostril, allowing the saline mixture to flow out of the unobstructed nostril. This removes debris such as pollen, dust and other irritants from the nasal passages. Repeat the entire process on the other side.

Tumeric

Spice up your diet with turmeric. It acts a natural anti-inflammatory and may even work better than aspirin. The spice is available at grocery stores and can be used sprinkled on food and ground into tea.

Nettle

This plant has been used for centuries to provide relief from allergies such as hayfever. It's referred to as stinging nettle and its root can be found ground into tea, while the leaves can be cooked and eaten.

Honey

Known for its soothing properties, honey can help break up mucus and calm irritation. Mix it with tea or warm water and lemon or add it to food to provide relief for seasonal allergies and colds.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This beloved health tonic can be used to treat almost any body part and is especially great for allergies. Make sure to mix it with plenty of water to avoid feeling the burn. Start off with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon to 6 ounces to 8 ounces of water.

Cool Compress

For swollen or puffy "allergy" eyes, use a cooling compress. The Bausch + Lomb Thera Pearl Eye Mask contains gel pearls that contour to the user's face shape. Leave on no more than the doctor-recommended time of 20 minutes.
