Sometime next year, the long-in-the-making sequel to Blade Runner is expected to begin filming.

Not much is known about the movie so far. We do know that Harrison Ford will once again star, returning to his original role as Rick Deckard. Ridley Scott will produce this time instead of direct, with Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) taking the helm in his stead. The script was written by Hampton Fancher (who co-wrote the original Blade Runner) and Michael Green (Heroes, Green Lantern). The idea for the new movie reportedly came from Scott and Fancher.

Variety is reporting that Ryan Gosling has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. He will co-star opposite Ford, pending current contract negotiations.

As with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, over three decades have passed since Ford's character was last seen in Blade Runner's world, and it's been reported that the sequel intends to accommodate the reality of his age by moving the story forward several decades. Since the original film was set in 2019, that should put the sequel more in the range of 2050.
