Marvel is no stranger to video games. While the number of releases may have dropped off in recent years, the House of Ideas has been pumping out video games for decades - and many of their best titles have been fighting games. Marvel vs. Capcom is, of course, the crown jewel: not only is it a fantastic game, but it's one of the most influential fighting games ever made. Entire events are dedicated solely to Marvel vs. Capcom, and it's easy to see how other Marvel fighting games would have a tough time measuring up.

Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects may have been a decent game, but how many people actually remember it? The worst part is that Marvel Nemesis wasn't the only fighting game to get swept under the rug, either: an unnamed fighting game from EA Chicago was in development, and featured a slew of different Marvel heroes and villains. Unfortunately for fans, the project was cancelled years ago when EA Chicago was closed for good.

However, that doesn't mean the project is completely gone: new footage of a match between Captain America and the Incredible Hulk has just surfaced online, giving players their best look at what could have been...

Clearly, the project is still in a very early state: there's no music, collision detection is spotty at best and the sound design is clearly not the finalzied version. Even so, it's an interesting concept: the cancelled Marvel game looks like it was taking cues from other free-roaming fighting games such as Power Stone and Atari's Dragon Ball Z titles, with a big focus on huge, open stages. There's also plenty of destruction (something that should be a part of any game starring the Hulk), though it's also in a very early, unpolished state.

Sadly, it doesn't look like Marvel is rushing back into anything major soon. Aside from its movie tie-ins, most of Marvel's interactive projects are Disney Infinity expansions and iOS games. Outside of Marvel vs. Capcom, it looks like fighting game fans don't have much to look forward too.

Who knows...maybe Marvel's got something up its sleeve for E3 2015?
