Justice League: Gods and Monsters, a new animated film from legendary creator Bruce Timm, is coming July 28 on Blu-ray and DVD.

It looks like it is going to be very different from any Justice League tale we've seen before. Thankfully, we will get a good idea what to expect from the movie with the digital Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles companion series, premiering June 8. What we can expect is plenty of alternate reality heroes and villains battling it out.

Machinima has just released a new trailer for the series, which you can check out below. In it, we get to see alternate versions of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, each of whom look radically different from their standard DC Universe counterparts. The Dark Knight isn't Bruce Wayne, Wonder Woman isn't an Amazon and Superman wasn't raised by the Kent family. In fact, Zod is Superman's father; Wonder Woman is the child of Ares, the God of War, and this version of the Dark Knight is actually Man-Bat.

The trio "protects" Earth with an iron fist and answers to nobody but themselves, which will likely lead them into direct confrontation with alternate universe versions of characters like Lex Luthor, Harley Quinn and more. The trailer's summary asks if the three heroes will save the world or will they rule it. Judging from Superman's bad guy goatee, ruling it seems the more likely option. It's no surprise then that world leaders seen in the trailer are more than a little concerned about these three dark heroes teaming up.

We've seen alternate reality DC Universe tales before where Superman rules the planet (like in Injustice), but Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles definitely stands apart. The show and film features Timm's signature style, made famous with his work on Batman: The Animated Series, as well as an all-new original story by Timm and co-producer Alan Burnett.

You can watch Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles starting June 8.
