Apple has finally let the cat out of the bag and revealed that its next-gen operating system — the much awaited iOS 9 — will make its way to compatible iDevices this fall.

While the new OS is slated to bring in a slew of new and exciting features Android users are already familiar with, such as multi-tasking, note-taking and more, people must be wondering if their existing Apple device will be eligible to receive the successor of iOS 8.

As expected, the latest flagships, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as the iPad Air 2, will benefit from the new operating system. The older iPhone 5S is also in line to receive the OS.

Here's the complete list of Apple devices that will get iOS 9, according to the company.

Smartphones

iPhone 6

iPhone 6 Plus

iPhone 5S

iPhone 5C

iPhone 5

iPhone 4S

Tablets

iPad mini 3

iPad mini 2

iPad mini

iPad Air 2

iPad Air

iPad Air fourth generation

iPad Air third generation

iPad Air 2

iPod

iPod touch fifth generation

Missing the bus will be all other iPods as well as the iPhone 4 and iPad first generation. Basically, all the devices that are not compatible with iOS 8 will not get the upgrade to iOS 9.

The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 get lucky, and thankfully, this will not be the end of the road for them. iOS 9 will be the fifth software upgrade for the iPad 2 and the fourth for the iPhone 4S.

Users will also be happy to learn that iOS 9 will not take up too much precious space on their devices as it will only take 1.3 GB. This will be a relief as iOS 8 took up 4.6 GB of space and had users complaining, especially those with 16 GB devices.

iOS 9 will also likely come out of the box with the next-gen Apple devices, as is the norm for the company. Apple, however, has not given an exact release date for iOS 9, simply saying it will release in July. It is anticipated that the new operating system will start making its way to older Apple devices after the next-gen iDevices hit the shelves. Therefore, it is unlikely that people on older-gen compatible Apple devices will benefit from iOS 9 prior to the holiday season.
