Samsung Display, a global leader in designing and manufacturing LCD and OLED display panels, has just unveiled its Transparent and Mirror OLED displays. The new displays – the first of their kind – are designed to provide a digital viewing platform that allows consumers to enjoy a visually engaging purchasing experience.

The futuristic displays were showcased this week at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where a "virtual necklace" display was demoed, featuring the world-renowned jewelry company Chow Sang Sang.

Samsung has big plans for the two unique displays, one of which is integrating the panels with Intel's RealSense technology. Once this is realized, the mirror display can act like a "virtual fitting room," with the help of Intel's 3D camera technology and a library of fully automated stored perceptions.

As a virtual fitting room, customers would be able to virtually view themselves trying on jewelry, shoes and clothing, only making a purchase after they're satisfied with what they have seen in the display.

The mirror display could also replace the traditional mirror at home, allowing consumers to receive the same digital-based information services they get from business establishments.

The transparent display was demoed at the exhibit as a billboard ad, showing advertising information on the clear panel while the scenery from the background remained visible. Together with RealSense's voice and gesture control capabilities, the transparent display is geared more toward interactive advertising. This suggests that sometime in the near future, billboards and shopping malls could display ads in a manner that is more engaging and intuitive.

"Samsung has a long legacy of leadership in technology innovation for digital signage, as well as for other applications, and we are now leading the next wave of digital signage advancement with our Mirror and Transparent OLED display solutions," said Oseung Yang, VP of Samsung Display Company.

"We are very excited to help bring a new interactive dimension to the world of multi-channel shopping through the integration of our newest OLED displays with Intel RealSense technology."

The company claims that its mirror OLED display is clearer and sharper, with faster response times and higher contrast level, when compared with mirror LCDs available on the market. Likewise, the transparent OLED display is deemed to be clearer and more colorful when placed side-by-side with similar technologies.

It remains to be seen whether the new concept displays will actually make it to consumer and business establishments in the near future — or if they'll just end up being a seasonal fad. In any case, it's nice to know that we've reached this stage in technology, and it's just the beginning of bigger things to come.
