Back in the days of the original Xbox and PlayStation 2, Star Wars: Battlefront II was the best-selling Star Wars game of all time. It was everything that fans of the franchise wanted, and an amazing multiplayer game - unfortunately, the studio behind the series fell on hard times, and the series' future wasn't looking good. In fact, most assumed that Battlefront had gone the way of the dodo.

Then, nearly a decade later, EA surprised everyone when it revealed that Star Wars: Battlefront was coming back in a big way. The studio behind Battlefield was at the helm, with plenty of help from the team working on Star Wars Episode VII - even the short debut trailer from Star Wars Celebration was fantastic. That being said, trailers are great - but a live demonstration is even better.

Fans are craving true, in-game action, and EA is finally ready to show Battlefront off: DICE finally revealed the first Star Wars: Battlefront gameplay footage. Long story short - it looks amazing.

First things first: EA claims that all of the footage was recorded on a pre-alpha version of the game, running on a PlayStation 4. If that's the case, then Star Wars: Battlefront could be one of the best-looking games to hit the system.

The demo shows both sides of the conflict on Hoth, as Imperial Stormtroopers attempt to destroy Rebel base. Right off the bat, a number of features that EA has talked about for months were confirmed: players have the ability to switch between first- and third-person perspectives, player race/species can be customized and vehicle battles play a huge role in the overall battle.

It also gives players a more up-close and personal look at the gameplay: while the trademark scale of Battlefield is present, the gameplay doesn't carry the same 'realistic' weight to it. Firing from the hip is a perfectly legitimate strategy, and being able to switch between perspectives should help keep things from feeling like a carbon copy of DICE's other shooter.

Vehicles were definitely a secondary focus, though what fans were able to see how much of an influence they can be: fighters can tear through enemies on the ground, sure, but the AT-AT walkers can call down devastating orbital strikes that can quickly tear through entire objectives. It's a shame that such powerful vehicles are stuck on rails, but the power trip alone should be worth the ride.

Of course, the only thing more powerful than an AT-AT is a Jedi, and fans were finally able to catch a glimpse of the series' Hero characters in action. As is to be expected, Luke and Darth Vader can tear through standard troops - what's more surprising is that clashes between Heroes should be much more engaging than the awkward, circle-strafing messes of past entries.

Oh, and did we mention that the game looks gorgeous? If you're hoping to check out the full five-minute demo from the show floor, you're in luck: just click the video below!

The best part is that it won't be that long before fans can grab the game for themselves: Star Wars: Battlefront is due out on Nov. 17!
