Although Hollywood has recently seemed obsessed with remakes, movie studios also appear to be interested in sequels — including sequels to movies from the decade of excess: the 1980s.

The last 80s flashback to get a new film might come as a surprise. It's none other than Top Gun. Yes, that Top Gun, the film starring Tom Cruise as "Maverick," a United States naval aviator.

It seems that the success of another 80s franchise sequel, Mad Max: Fury Road, has inspired Hollywood to dig into the archives of big hair, bright colors and synthesized music for more movies made during that decade.

Perhaps it's an instance of "what's old is new again" — especially now that a Ghostbusters movie is also in the works, this time with an all-female cast.

So what would even work for a Top Gun sequel? A lot has happened in aviation technology since the first movie, so Top Gun 2 will have Maverick facing something more modern: drones.

It seems that Hollywood plans on making a movie about Maverick out-maneuvering a fleet of drones, which on its surface doesn't make a lot of sense because the U.S. could just send drones in to fight other drones. But producer David Ellison told Collider that the new movie actually tackles "the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots."

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," said Ellison, who is the CEO of Skydance Productions. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."

Marks confirmed that Cruise will be returning to his role from the original film, although it's likely Maverick will no longer be the top gun. He'll probably play one of the older, more experienced pilots — perhaps up against those young guys who fly drones.

Of course, one could argue that we really don't need a Top Gun sequel, but that's what Hollywood does best: sell us movies we didn't even know we wanted.
