What do you get when you combine the 8-bit world of video game The Escapists with The Walking Dead? You get a bizarre prison break adventure game with zombies.

Today, game developer Team 17 announced to IGN that they're creating a version of The Escapists with The Walking Dead in a game that pays homage to the comics by Robert Kirkman and, of course, the TV series.

The video game starts the same as the comic, with main character Rick Grimes waking up in a hospital bed only to find out that the world is now covered in zombies.

Rick's first task is to escape the facility, but eventually his goal is to lead himself and survivors through a zombie-infested world.

And this is all told through an 8-bit graphic game that will soon be available on both the Xbox One and PC later this year.

The game is also likely to become a hit, if The Escapists' previous success is any indication: when it launched this year, it sold over 600,000 copies on the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The Escapists version of The Walking Dead, though, isn't just about running through levels and escaping zombies. Rick must also find and use items, combining them and utilizing them not just for fighting zombies but to progress in the game. Of course, killing zombies is the name of the game here and Rick not only gets a host of ranged weapons for the job, but also melee weapons (which we all know make less noise because noise attracts more zombies).

The game features running and combat, but also escape and puzzles. Fans of The Walking Dead comics and TV series know that surviving the zombie apocalypse isn't just about killing zombies: sometimes the best way to survive requires analytical thinking, skill and a well-planned, but quick, escape.
