Harrow County has quickly become one of Dark Horse's hottest selling titles. Its blend of Southern tales with gothic horror has gone over so well that not only did its first issue quickly sell out, but Universal Cable Productions recently announced that the title is under development as a potential television series.

The oft-disturbing comic book is now on its third issue and Harrow County #3 is just as dark as #1, even though main character Emmy is finally learning the truth about who and what she is.

At the end of Harrow County #2, Emmy escaped to the woods with neighbor Bernice, fleeing from those who wish her harm, including her Pa, who must kill her to protect the community. Emmy finally learns why in those deep, dark woods, especially after stumbling upon an old cemetery, but she also learns other darker secrets and discovers that some of the "haints" that lie in the forest are her allies, protecting her when she comes under attack.

As Emmy brought the skinless boy's skin with her on her journey, he also acts as an ally, warning her of approaching danger before she's aware of it.

Writer Cullen Bunn has a great way with Southern dialogue, particularly with Emmy's voice. The story itself is also well set up and continues to offer up a good creep factor, keeping the tone from the previous two issues. There are also a few surprises and disturbing moments in this issue, including something horrifying at the end that leaves us wondering about Emmy's safety in the next issue. Bunn also handles Emmy's realization that there is something dark inside of her adeptly, scaring not just her, but also the reader.

As with previous issues, Tyler Crook's art paints a gruesome world where dark things lurk around every corner. However, it's the panels showing Emmy's emotions, particularly in her eyes, that grabs readers the most, pulling them into the gnawing fear that she has about her potential for evil. Also, the panels of Emmy crying are incredibly detailed, right down to the flustered complexion and snotty nose.

Harrow County #3 proves that this is one title that's a must-read: you can pick up a physical copy in stores carrying Dark Horse or download a digital copy from Dark Horse's website.
