Warcraft has been a long time coming, but now it is nearly done and getting prepped for a June 2016 release in theaters. But before that happens, the film's writer and director Duncan Jones is hoping to finally get a passion project, albeit a highly-anticipated one, off the ground.

Ever since the success of his 2009 feature film Moon, Jones has been trying to follow-up it up with a Blade Runner-esque sci-fi thriller called Mute. Now it looks like he'll finally be able to do so and a lot faster than anyone probably could have anticipated.

"Dark Horse and Glenn Fabry and myself have been working on the graphic novel for [Mute] for years now — literally years — and there's a very good chance, if I can squeeze [it in] in these 11 months, that you'll see the film before you see the graphic novel," Jones told Empire at Comic-Con Thursday.

Those 11 months, of course, refer to the time between now and when Warcraft hits theaters, which seems like surprisingly quick progress made on a film that has taken years to make any headway toward the start of filming.

"It's 11 months to sneak in my little indie sci-fi before Warcraft comes out," Jones told Empire. "I got Moon done in 11 months."

The story of Mute revolves around a mute bartender who has to tackle the mean streets of Berlin to find his kidnapped girlfriend. After some difficulty attracting financiers to the project, Jones announced that he planned to turn Mute into a graphic novel first a la Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain. But now it looks like the story has moved back to a silver screen debut.

In other Comic-Con news, Jones also told i09 that he wants to make two sequels to Warcraft. With almost a year before Warcraft even hits theaters, let's just hope with all of this talk Jones isn't biting off more than he can chew.
