Over the past few weeks we've seen more and more of Paul Feig's all-new, all female Ghostbusters as the film shoots in Boston. We've seen the new car and each of the new characters in costume, but the one thought on everybody's mind is if any of the old Ghostbusters might make a return.

At least one star from the original Ghostbusters will be making an appearance in the new movie in the form of Dan Aykroyd. Aykroyd took to Twitter to announce his involvement, saying he shot a scene with Kristen Wiig. He then goes on to say the "Lady GB's" are adorable, hilarious and badass.

Aykroyd has since deleted his tweet, but the cat is already out of the bag. What we still don't know, however, is what exactly Aykroyd role in the film will be. There seem to be two possibilities. One is that Aykroyd is reprising his character Ray Stantz from Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2. The other is that Aykroyd's involvement is nothing more than a minor cameo appearance, an opportunity for audiences to go "hey, that was the guy from the first movie!" before moving along.

Feig has said in the past that his Ghostbusters film wouldn't have anything to do with the previous two movies, with this new film starting from square one.

"I love the first one so much I don't want to do anything to ruin the memory of that," Feig told EW last year. "So it just felt like, let's just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn't gone through it so it's like, oh my God what's going on?"

When specifically asked whether or not actors like Bill Murray or Aykroyd would return for the reboot, Feig had this to say:

"Well, I mean, look, those are my comedy heroes. So as far as I'm concerned, anybody wants to come back I welcome with open arms. It would just be in different roles now, but it would be fun to figure out how to do that."

For fans hoping that this new movie might involve Stantz and the rest of the old team passing the torch to this new group of Ghostbusters, the odds aren't looking good. Expect Aykroyd to appear in a minor cameo role as a completely new character.
