LucasArts has yet to jump on the virtual reality bandwagon with a Star Wars VR game. But that's okay, because a group of fans has them covered.

This is no ordinary group of fans, though. This game is being produced by short film director Rob McLellan and his visual effects artist Craig Stiff. McLellan is the director of multi-award-winning scifi short film ABE, which MGM has optioned as a full-length feature film with McLellan at the helm.

Thanks to high quality visual effects from Stiff and the work of video game studio Hammerhead VR, Star Wars VR looks amazing. It's being built using Unreal Engine 4, and it nails the atmosphere and tone of the Star Wars universe brilliantly. The game trailer shows off familiar environments from the original trilogy such as the Death Star trench run, Hoth, Cloud City, Jabba's Palace and Endor.

The imagery seen in this trailer is almost as perfect as what we've seen of Star Wars Battlefront. Notice all of the little details, like the lighting in the forest on Endor, and how much the Rancor looks like the genuine article.

This nonprofit fan project — which is the only way McLellan & Co. can legally get away with distributing it — should be ready to download and play on the Oculus Rift when it arrives in early 2016.
