Microsoft and the Xbox One are in trouble as the Sony PlayStation 4 took the crown of best selling console for the 4th month running. It is now quite clear why Microsoft chose to drop the Kinect in favor of a cheaper console.

According to a new report from the NPD, the Xbox One is living dangerously while the PlayStation 4 is living the king's life. However, on the software side of things, Titanfall is still the top selling video game, mainly because it is available on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.

It is not certain how many units of PlayStation 4 was sold in April, but we are certain of the Xbox One numbers after Microsoft confirmed a sale of 115,000 units. Whatever way you look at it, those are terrible numbers when compared to the Xbox 360 in the same timeframe.

"Hardware experienced a solid 76 percent growth over April 2013, driven by console hardware sales which increased by 120 percent in April 2014 over last year," the research firm said in a news release Thursday. "Life to date, sales of PS4 and Xbox One hardware have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and 360 hardware through their first six months of sales."

In an interview with Forbes, Microsoft chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi, tries to explain why the PlayStation 4 is ahead in sales at this time. He placed the blame on the fact that the Xbox One is only available in 13 markets while the PlayStation 4 is available in over 40.

"It's hard to really assess the gap in sales. They're in many more markets right now than we are," says Mehdi. They're in 40+ markets, we're in 13. People have been more satisfied with the Xbox 360 than the PS3, so in that respect people have less of a need to upgrade in the short term due to regular updates for the Xbox 360."
