It's not every day that one of the world's most successful directors takes a break from making blockbusters and crafts a short film instead.

Christopher Nolan, the man behind some of the most talked-about "intelligent blockbusters" of the last ten years – including The Dark Knight, Inception and Interstellar – has put his talents to an unexpected use. Instead of a new big-screen, big-budget flick, Nolan has directed a documentary short film.

Titled Quay, the short chronicles the work of twin brothers and stop-motion animators Stephen and Timothy Quay. The duo, known professionally as the Quay Brothers, are responsible for serious animated fare like In Absentia, The Comb and Street of Crocodiles. Nolan apparently took on the documentary because he's a huge fan.

Quay is being released as part of a national tour of Quay Brothers films that were personally selected by Nolan. "The Quay Brothers - On 35MM" tour features the three short animated movies listed above and Quay. The tour begins on August 19, 2015, traveling to eleven U.S. cities, before The Quay Brothers: Collected Short Films is released on Blu-ray on October 20, with Nolan's Quay included.

Entertainment Weekly has posted the first trailer for the tour, which includes a look at Quay. Take a look.
