Many Final Fantasy fans would argue that the best Final Fantasy game of all time is still Final Fantasy VII. That game was so popular in the franchise that many of those fans keep playing it over and over.

But what if you are one of those fans who is tired of playing the 3D version of the game with its old graphics and gameplay?

You're in luck, because some Final Fantasy VII fans have created a new version of the game, re-imagining it as a 2D platform side-scroller.

The result is something that looks and sounds a lot like Street Fighter, but on acid. It's a lot of fighting and combat, but you can also still use materia and summon guardians. For a fan-made game, though, it looks impressive.

"As for Materia system, we built it into the players' attack," write the developers of the game on their website. "Ideally, they should be collected as players progress in the game. Again for simplicity purposes, both Cloud and Tifa comes pre-equipped with Fire, Ice and Lightning. At the end of a 4-hit combo, the Materia will be effected. Ice will freeze the enemies for X seconds for players to continue hitting them. And when the freeze ends, an extra damage is dealt to the enemies. Certain enemies are immuned."

And this isn't just a fake trailer of the game as a side-scroller: it's actually playable in your browser. You will need the Unity plugin to make it work, but if that's an issue, you can also directly download the Final Fantasy VII: Re-Imagined side-scrolling game as a Windows file.

Of course, there's a catch: this playable version is only a demo. However, it seems that the developer plans on eventually completing the game, so grab your tissues: it's likely Aerith's death will still hit you hard when you get to that point in the story.

The game is also currently limited to two characters you can play: Cloud and Tifa, but you can call Barrett in as a support character from time to time.
