In anticipation for the series premiere of AMC's zombie apocalypse-fest Fear the Walking Dead, the network has released a worldwide exclusive clip of the first scene on its website.

For those unfamiliar with the premise of the spinoff show, Fear the Walking Dead is set in Los Angeles and takes place a few months prior to the onset of events in The Walking Dead, before the Dead universe is a zombie-ridden, dystopian nightmare. The plot centers around the members of a blended family headed by high school guidance counselor Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis).

(Warning: spoilers for the first scene ahead.)

Clocking in at almost three and a half minutes, the first scene depicts Madison's son Nick (Frank Dillane), a heroin addict, waking up in a deserted, run-down church. Stumbling around and shaking off the drowsy after-effects of opiates, Nick comes face-to-face with the undead, a woman-turned-zombie whom he apparently knows -- and who may or may not be patient zero.

Here is an official synopsis of the show from the AMC website:

[A] gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and English teacher Travis Manawa have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.
