Surviving in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Fallout isn't easy. Players must use all the tools at their disposal to craft the best character possible, and that means understanding the game's S.P.E.C.I.A.L. character stat system.

Those who have played previous Fallout games will find the acronym familiar, but for newcomers Bethesda has just released a handy new video detailing what the "S" in S.P.E.C.I.A.L. will do for players in Fallout 4.

"S" of course stands for Strength, and it has a couple of important functions in Bethesda's new game. For starters, a high strength stat means players will be able to pick up and carry more items around the Wasteland without becoming over-encumbered. Becoming over-encumbered reduces your character's movement speed to a crawl, and in the dangerous world of Fallout that means certain death.

A high Strength score also means you are able to dish out more punishment with your fists and melee weapons. The Fallout universe has a number of potent melee weapons like the Power Fist and Ripper chain-sword that can be used to defeat enemies, but if none of those are on hand imrpovised weapons like a 2x4 with a nail in it will get the job done. If absolutely no clubs or swords are around, players can always resort to their bare hands, though that might not go so well. As the video shows, bringing a knife (or fists) to a gun fight isn't always going to be a viable option.

This is just the first video in what we can only assume will be a seven video series. Up next will likely be Perception, followed by Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck. Of all of them, Luck should prove to be one of the more interesting, as the stat's true effects have always been a little mysterious.

Fallout 4 is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation and PC on Nov. 10. Bethesda recently announced that mod support will be coming to both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game, along with numerous other free updates. The game will also be receiving a $30 season pass that will grant buyers access to all the game's post-launch DLC.
