"The Shannara Chronicles," due to air on MTV early next year, got everyone buzzing at the New York Comic Con when the cast and crew of the epic fantasy adventure brought some never-before-seen footage of the upcoming series and a new trailer.

"The Original Shannara Trilogy" was penned by famed fantasy author Terry Brooks. The first of the three novels was published in 1977; however, it will reportedly not be the focus of the series. The new MTV series will run for 10 episodes in its first season and will star sci-fi and fantasy veteran John Rhys-Davies, along with Ivana Baquero, Manu Bennett, Austin Butler, Poppy Drayton and Emelia Burns.

Scheduled to premiere in January 2016, "The Shannara Chronicles" will open to events beginning in the second book of the trilogy, "The Elfstones of Shannara," first published in 1982. According to reports, the reasons behind the producers' decision to skip the first novel "The Sword of Shannara" include the assessment that the strong female leads and the love story in the second book would make for better television drama material.

The series will bring to the small screen the same landscapes that helped bring "The Lord of The Rings" and "The Hobbit" movie trilogies to life. The production filmed in New Zealand and will also feature Elves, Dwarves and Trolls as inhabitants of the fictional Four Lands.

The trailer revealed at Comic Con teased "dark days ahead" and a magical tree whose leaves each represent a fallen demon. The tree begins to die, and Allanon, a wise druid, warns that "the creatures of darkness will be released one by one."

We're expecting some epic adventures and massive Elves vs. Demons battles up ahead in this series.

"I can't see how it could've been done better!" said John Rhys-Davies at Comic Con.
