The 2009 Star Trek reboot was a great, action-packed space opera. True, it focused a little more on action (and lens flares) than the series that inspired it, but it was still a solid reboot for a franchise that had laid dormant for years. Star Trek: Into Darkness, the 2013 sequel, fumbled quite a bit—instead of setting out on its own path like its predecessor, Into Darkness became a darker, grittier, less-than-fun take on Wrath of Kahn. It certainly wasn't the worst movie ever made, but it certainly wasn't the best, either.

Now it's time to see if the third film, simply titled Star Trek: Beyond, can revitalize the rebooted franchise. Traditionally, three-quels are far from the best entry in a series, and Beyond has had no shortage of trouble getting off the ground. That being said, the production just passed a major milestone: filming is done, and the movie is headed into post-production.

The news was broken by several of the film's cast and crew, with many members of the production team heading to social media to celebrate the occasion. Zachary Quinto, otherwise known as Spock, posted a short video to Instagram yesterday afternoon:

this. maybe for the last time. maybe not.

Quinto's video was followed by Sofia Boutella, whose role in the film is still a mystery—even so, she was more than happy to thank the film's cast and crew on Twitter:

Finally, Simon Pegg—who now doubles as Scottie and one of the film's writers—posted one last picture from the set:

Considering just how much post-production goes into each of these movies, there's still quite a lot of work left to do. Again, Star Trek: Beyond has already had more than its fair share of production troubles—let's hope everything goes a bit more smoothly from here on out.

Star Trek: Beyond opens on July 22, 2016.
