Ricky Gervais is confirmed to host the 73rd Golden Globe Awards to be held on January 10, 2016.

This will be the comedian's fourth time to host the event in the last six years.

With one word and two hashtags, the Golden Globe Awards took to Twitter to make the shocking announcement. The Internet of course, erupted with the news.

"Psssst! #HesBack #GoldenGlobes," read the tweet, posted with a silouhette of Gervais holding a Golden Globe trophy.

"We're excited to have Ricky Gervais back to host the most enjoyable awards show of the season in his own inimitable way. Disarming and surprising, Ricky is ready to honor - and send up - the best work of the year in film and television. Fasten your seats belts," Robert Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment chairman, said in a statement.

The 54-year-old comedian will take over for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who have hosted the event for the past three years.

Gervais hosted for 2010, 2011 and 2012 ceremonies. His controversial jokes received no less than raised eyebrows and polite side-whispers.

In 2011, he took a dig at actor Charlie Sheen's publicized and trending "meltdown."

"It's going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking - or as Charlie Sheen calls it: breakfast."

A year before that, he put actress Angelina Jolie in the limelight.

"Actors aren't just loved here in Hollywood, they are loved the world over. You could be in the third world and get a glimpse of a Hollywood star and it could make you feel a little bit better. You could be a little Asian child with no possessions and no money. But you could see a picture of Angelina Jolie and you'd think, 'Mummy!'"

Gervais' most recent object of "affection" was Jodie Foster's sexuality.

"Jodie Foster's Beaver ... I haven't seen it myself. I've spoken to a lot of guys here, they haven't seen it either," he said at the 2012 Golden Globes Awards.

Gervais' 2012 hosting stint gave NBC nearly 17 million viewers and drew mostly positive reviews.

"What will he say? What will he do? We can't wait to find out, and we are so happy that he's back!" stated Barry Adelman, executive producer of the 73rd Golden Globes and Exec. V.P., Television for Dick Clark productions.

"I've told my agent to never let me be persuaded to do it again though. It's like a parachute jump," Gervais responded to the backlash of his return to the Golden Globes stage.

The 73rd Golden Globe Awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton hotel. Nominations will be announced on Dec. 10.
