Sony wants people to try out its virtual reality headset for free by sending it directly to their homes. This is perhaps the most significant effort in getting VR headsets into people's hands, or more appropriately, strapped to their heads.

As part of a new program, interested PSVR buyers will be able to try out the system in the safety of their own home. If they find out it's not for them, they can easily send it right back to Sony, no harm done.

PlayStation VR Demo Program

The program, however, is only open for certain customers, particularly PlayStation Plus members in the United States. PlayStation Plus is the company's premium membership service, for those who don't know.

It appears Sony itself will handle the selection process and will send selected players a special registration code that lets them reserve a PSVR "trial bundle." This bundle includes the following: a PSVR headset, a PlayStation Camera, PlayStation Move controllers, a copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, and a PSVR Demo Disc. These are the same things that are bundled with the recently released PSVR Skyrim Bundle, which costs $449.99.

Those deemed eligible and decide to participate will be required by Sony to have a credit card. It'll put a hold on it and promptly send the bundle, which users get to keep for a few weeks.

Those who fail to return the bundle after the given period will be charged $299.99 and will be allowed to keep it forever, which is actually a pretty excellent deal when compared with the similar PSVR Skyrim Bundle that's way more expensive.

PlayStation VR Demo Program Requirements

There are several terms and conditions to keep in mind, however, such as age requirements, the trial period, and others. Make sure to hit the link to read them all thoroughly. It's worth noting that Sony will only provide the PSVR bundle, not the PS4 console itself.

The promotion will be available beginning Dec. 1 until Dec. 14 and limited to 1,400 PlayStation Plus members only. At the time of writing, it appears the program is now full and Sony has shut down registrations.

PlayStation VR

The PSVR originally launched in 2016 as the official VR headset for PS4 consoles. Sony has since delivered an updated iteration, implementing slight but much-needed enhancements, such as HDR passthrough with the external processing unit. This is the model that's included in the promotion, by the way.
