Volvo aims to bring a wireless charging capability for its electric vehicles, but it will first go on a three-year pilot to test its capabilities and features before it goes public. The company will test it out in Sweden and focus on its EVs used as taxi cabs in the country, bringing a massive need for charging as they go around the city to transport passengers.
Volvo is Testing Wireless EV Chargers in Sweden
Volvo aims to release a wireless charging capability for electric vehicles, bringing a non-contact capability to replenish a car's power cell whenever needed. The company will use this first on its fully electric XC40 Recharge Cars that will serve as taxis in Sweden, helping the test get more needs to charge the vehicle as it drives around for the day.
The wireless charger would be a fast charger, giving an output of 40 kilowatts faster than its regular charger that only brings 11 kW for the car. It will be as fast as the company's 50 kW DC fast charger that it offers on the purchase, focusing on replenishing the battery that will require less time to idle or wait for its next trip.

Volvo Wireless Chargers for EV: 3-Year Pilot
The company aims to bring the cars and its wireless chargers into a "commercial usage scenario" that may be used for more than 12 hours a day. Ideally, the charging stations will help the taxis average 6,213 miles (100,000 kilometers) per year, which is a massive trip.
According to Engadget, the Charging Pads will be embedded to the ground on the taxi pads for where they will stop and pick up passengers.
Wireless EV Chargers, Superchargers
Way back in 2013, companies already aimed to bring wireless chargers for electric vehicles that would be available for people to use while outside or in public. The venture is to disguise these EV chargers as manhole covers that would effectively help in answering different needs to open up roads and put the chargers available for use.
Different proposals also came into light that aims to bring wireless charging for EVs, and it would also avoid any contact with the car as some focus on integrating it on the roads. It would help users not get off the said road whenever they need to charge their depleting power cells for their EVs, reducing the need for a long stopover.
Wireless EV Chargers are the future of mobility and sustainability as they will help reduce the need for constructing charging stations for electric vehicles. Tesla's Superchargers that focus on fast charging for EVs and batteries are also a good step on the future's change to EVs.
Nevertheless, Volvo's testing aims to bring an accessible feature for users, especially now that the world is transitioning fast.
