Making use of old technology and updating it to more recent functions is usually very interesting to watch. A man was able to use an old iPod and turn it into a retro Spotify player with a few tweaks.

The Popularity of the Apple iPod

According to the story by Slash Gear, when iPods were extremely popular back in the day, there was no way for the device to support Spotify. Those that wanted to sync their Spotify library to the iPod would have to manually download the tracks and convert them to DRM-free versions before being able to transfer them.

Back in May 2022, the iPod Touch was proclaimed dead and the device finally became obsolete. Due to its rarity, people were starting to pawn their old iPod Classics on eBay at prices close to their launch.

Man Turns Old iPod Classic Into a Retro Spotify Player

The older devices, however, still come with some limitations when it comes to their dependence on iTunes in order to sync files. A YouTuber that goes by the alias Guy Dupont has decided to tinker with the older device in order to convert the iPod classic into a gadget capable of streaming Spotify exclusively.

The new device no longer runs on the standard iPod interface but instead a totally customized one of its own. Dupont decided to swap the monochrome display and install a colored one that allows users to choose a dark theme that closely resembles the Matrix movies.

iPod Spotify Player Added with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Connectivity

The YouTuber decided to add a Raspberry Pi Zero W model in order to enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity to add to the small device. Dupond decided to retain a 3.56mm headphone jack despite not working.

Dupont added a micro-USB port for easy charging in order to change the Apple 30-pin docking adapter. The YouTuber made sure that the buttons on the front still included a click wheel which worked like it was supposed to.

How to Make a Retro Spotify Player

To add, Dupont decided to include a vibration motor in order to add haptic feedback as a "replacement to the clicker sound while navigating through the original iPod interface." For those with the technical experience, Dupont uploaded a second video where he detailed how he brought the project to life.

More details regarding the project were uploaded to the Hackaday page in order to show a detailed process regarding how to change the iPod Classic and add Spotify support. Even the virtual player is designed to look like the iPod Classic where users can sign into their Spotify or Apple Music account in order to access their music library in order to listen to music through the iPod-like interface.
