The standardization of the USB-C was already a huge move for the industry as the cables were capable of 40 Gbps. Now, the next USB standard, the USB 4 version 2.0, could double the speeds reaching 80 Gbps.

USB-C 4 Version 2.0 to Replace the Current USB-C Connections

While some people found it hard to adapt to the USB-C, others saw this as an upgrade. The adaptation of the USB-C replaced the standardized Android chargers.

According to the story by Engadget, the USB 4 now has a newer and faster version on its horizon, and users won't even need to purchase a new cable in order to use its technology. The next USB 4 version 2.0 is designed to replace the USB-C standard.

The Next Standard is Capable of Double the PerformancePushing from 40 Gbps to 80 Gbps

The USB Promoter Group released an official announcement that the next-gen USB-C cables that were reportedly capable of going 40 Gbps will be getting faster speeds the moment that the new standard finally becomes available.

It was also mentioned in the press release that key characteristics of the updated USB 4 solution will include all the way up to 80 Gbps operation which is based on a new "physical layer architecture." The USB 4 solution, however, will be using the existing 40 Gbps USB Type-C passive cables as well as the "newly-defined 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables."

No Specifics were Released Regarding How the Technology Could Work to Achieve Such Speeds

The USB Promoter Group, however, did not explain exactly how this is possible or more details regarding how they work. A spokesperson for the organization gave a little more detail regarding the new technology.

The Verge was told by a spokesperson for the organization that it was a requirement "when the new specification was developed and the specifics to how 80 Gbps signaling is accomplished will be disclosed once the final specification is released."

USB Promoter Group Says the Update is Still Targeted at Developers

As per press time, it remains unclear when the new standard will be officially rolled out to consumers. Within the press release, the USB Promoter Group noted that the update is specifically still targeted at developers.

Since the update is still just open to developers, it could still take a while before the technology officially launches for regular users. When the technology launches, gadgets could see a shift in function or design to accommodate the new technology.
