Some Radeon RX 7900 XTX units have been reported to be overheating. After several reports concluded that a flawed vapor chamber was to blame for its throttling issue, AMD now officially recognized that the thermal solution was likely at fault.

Known Overheating Issue

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card was released last month. Since then, many customer complaints claim the GPU suffers from performance concerns due to running at abnormally high temperatures.

In light of this subject, AMD has issued a statement declaring that they are aware of a manufacturing flaw affecting select Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference GPUs.

According to Verge, multiple customers initially reported the problems on Reddit and other online forums, saying that overheated RX 7900 GPUs slowed down their computers. In some instances, it caused them to freeze entirely. Heat benchmarks have reached 115 °C (239 °F).

Desktop GPUs from the Radeon RX 7900 Series may reach temperatures of 110 degrees Celsius while under intense loads, such as 4K gaming. However, doing so for long periods of time is not advised for the GPU's efficiency.

Some affected users also noted that the graphic cards were too hot even when used with less demanding applications.

In a statement, AMD explained that their team is seeking to figure out the source of the unexpected performance restriction on RX 7900 XTX graphic cards.

"Based on our observations to date, we believe the issue is related to the thermal solution used in AMD's reference design and is occurring in a limited number of cards sold. We are working to resolve this issue for the affected cards. Customers experiencing this unexpected limitation should contact AMD support."

For a while, AMD ignored the flaws and told customers whose GPUs overheated that "temperatures are normal," thus rejecting their requests for new units.

Igor's Lab, a German technology news site, has looked into the rumor and found that the problem may be connected to the vapor chamber of the RX 7900 XTX. Based on the findings, it might be an allusion to the "thermal solution" problems AMD mentioned in its statement.

Affected Units and Clients

According to Tom's Hardware, AMD could not say how many MBA (Made by AMD) products were impacted. The good news is that the defective thermal solution is only present on specific batches of reference Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards, and not all of them.

Custom builds are immune to the issue since they do not use AMD's recommended cooling method.

Furthermore, AMD has verified that the vulnerability only affects the Radeon RX 7900 XTX. Therefore, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is safe.

VideoCardz reports that the company is extending a refund or card swap option to affected clients.
