Electric cars of German carmaker Volkswagen are pictured in front of the 'Transparent Factory' (Glaeserne Manufaktur) production site in Dresden, eastern Germany on March 1, 2023.

The announcement is in response to the carjacking that involved a VW and a two-year-old child.

The subscription will be connected to vehicle emergency services for most models of the VW from 2020 to 2023, including ID.4s.

The Chicago Carjacking

Last month, a violent carjacking took place in Libertyville, Illinois wherein a VW Atlas was stolen from a woman's driveway with a two-year-old boy still inside the call. The mother of the boy was seriously injured after being run over by the carjacker.

A detective called VW to locate the car with Car-Net, but the VW rep said that the Atlas' courtesy trial period had ended, and the owned needed to pay $150 to reactivate it to find the Atlas.

A family member paid the $150, but 30 minutes were wasted. Even before VW found the vehicle, police officers had already found the child who was unharmed but had been abandoned in a parking lot. Following this, the police also found the Atlas.

VW Wants to Make It Right

The incident had hurt the reputation of the car manufacturer, which is why they released a statement saying that they want to make things right. Thus, it resulted in the free Car-Net five-year subscription.

Car-Net subscriptions include Automatic Crash Notifications, Emergency Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Locator, and Anti-Theft Alerts.

The ID.4 Safe & Secure package includes Information Assistance, which allows owners to call an agent for help or send a destination to the car even while driving.

The Automatic Crash Notification, when the airbags go off, the driver will be contacted automatically by the Car-Net Response Center to see if help is needed.

The Emergency Assistance allows vehicle passengers to call for help by pressing the SOS button to connect to emergency services. The location of the vehicle will be sent out immediately, and an operator will be on the line for assistance.

How It Works

The Car-Net Safe & Secure subscription coverage will start as soon as the owner creates a myVW account and accepts the myVW and Car-Net Terms of Service. It will remain active for five years after the sale date or June 1, 2023.

The Volkswagen Car-Net Safe & Secure service offers a convenient and reliable way to help you stay safe on the road. With the Emergency Assistance feature, you can quickly call for help in an emergency and access other features like Roadside Assistance, Automatic Crash Notifications, and Vehicle Health Reports. The service is available for five years after the sale date, so you can rest assured that you'll be taken care of for the duration of your ownership.
