The latest update to Microsoft Teams is here, and this presented a rework of the video conferencing app which the company regards to be faster and uses less RAM compared to before. Before this, Microsoft used the so-called Electron framework for the software or app, but now, it utilizes the Edge WebView 2 backend which significantly improves its performance.

If your experience on Microsoft Teams before was laggy or somewhat affecting the performance of other apps, this is because of its heavy framework.

The new Microsoft Teams app is now available for Windows and Mac, says the Redmond giant, announcing the latest version of the video conferencing app. This version uses less of the random access memory (RAM) it previously used by as much as 50 percent, with the company also boasting of its faster performance, ushering in a new era for the app.

Microsoft said that users will automatically be migrated to the new Teams app in the coming months, but users need not wait for it. "To get started on your new Teams journey today, simply flip the toggle in the upper-left corner of the classic Teams app," said the release.

Teams also boast of its latest full feature parity available for all, including custom line-of-business apps, third-party apps, breakout rooms, 7x7 video, call queues, PSTN calling, contextual search, and more.

Microsoft's Edge WebView 2 backend

The company credits this success because of the new Edge WebView 2 backend which it used to build the new experiences and offers of Microsoft Teams. This backend allows developers to embed web code into the different parts of their native apps, offering a hybrid app approach to its users.

It allows a wider reach, better performance, and overall improvements to the experience, with Teams experiencing this firsthand.

Video Conferencing Apps

The global pandemic has shown the world that it can do virtual, remote work for almost all industries, particularly the technology and social media areas, with a connected experience required. Among those leading in providing these experiences are video conferencing apps, with Microsoft Teams leveraging its desktop, web, and mobile apps with presentation features, meetings, and more

Among those is the top name in the industry, Zoom, which has had its ups and downs amidst and after the lockdowns. However, the company is now revolutionizing the experience with generative artificial intelligence integrations to its technology.

Still, many were concerned about its training of the AI, especially as it can use user videos for the needs of its AI models.

Microsoft is getting significant traction now, and this is because of its AI developments that are altogether improving the company and its apps to get more advanced experiences. Teams may be part of the AI improvements, but natively, Microsoft is offering improvements and enhancements, particularly this latest rework for seamless use.
