iOS 18 is not yet here since iPhone users are enjoying iOS 17.3 in the meantime. However, analysts claim that Apple is preparing to release a next-gen version of Siri, its voice assistant.

Many are aware of Siri's declining performance as it lags behind its counterparts, and Apple knows how to work this out. As such, the Cupertino firm eyes an ambitious project with iOS 18's release for WWDC 2024.

Can we see a ChatGPT-style feature from Siri this year?

ChatGPT-Like Features Might Come to iOS 18 Siri Version: What is Apple Planning Here?
(Photo: Omid Armin from Unsplash) As early as now, analysts believe Apple will launch a next-gen version of Siri for iOS 18. The digital assistant is expected to boast AI features like many anticipated before.

While Apple has kept its generative AI endeavors under wraps, reports have surfaced about the company's development of a Large Language Model (LLM) system known as AppleGPT. Though currently confined to internal use, insiders anticipate a significant AI-related announcement from Apple in the near future, possibly with the upcoming Siri overhaul.

Aiming Higher than ChatGPT

While the immediate deployment of an LLM system could be feasible, Apple has set its sights on surpassing existing models like ChatGPT in two crucial ways, as detailed by 9to5Mac.

The first one is all about on-device processing. Diverging from the norm of remote server processing, the iPhone maker aims to conduct AI operations directly on users' devices. This not only promises enhanced speed but also prioritizes user privacy.

However, it might be quite tricky to deal with the challenge that lies in optimizing these services for the limited memory of mobile devices. It's considered a hurdle contributing to the extended timeline.

The next one is about AI capabilities: Unlike ChatGPT's focus on language processing, Apple envisions incorporating AI capabilities in audio and video domains. This expansive approach aligns with Apple's explorations into visual and audio AI processing, evident in features like Door Detection and Live Captions.

Major Siri Upgrade Anticipated for iOS 18

As highlighted by The Financial Times in its report, the  imminent launch of an advanced Siri version during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is expected to be revealed along with iOS 18.

Analysts from Morgan Stanley speculate that the new operating system will be tailored to facilitate generative AI, potentially featuring Siri powered by an LLM. This keeps in touch with earlier leaks and is further substantiated by recent Apple job listings prominently featuring "Deep Learning."

"As far as the chips in their devices, they are definitely being more and more geared towards AI going forward from a design and architecture standpoint," SemiAnalysis analyst Dylan Patel said.

Elevating Siri's Capabilities: A Timely Evolution

While speculation persists, the prospect of a substantial Siri relaunch gains credibility. Large Language Models like ChatGPT have redefined expectations in AI, prompting Apple to address Siri's perceived limitations.

The incorporation of generative AI promises a significant leap in Siri's capabilities, with on-device processing reinforcing Apple's commitment to privacy.

Integrating video and audio processing positions Apple to redefine Siri's intelligence, potentially justifying the wait for this transformative upgrade.

As reported by TechTimes last December, there are tons of major AI enhancements that will come on iPhone 16. This could be the selling point of iPhone 15's successor this 2024.
