Google is optimistic about the integration of its cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) models into smartphones within the next year.

The tech giant foresees its Gemini large language model (LLM), designed to rival Microsoft-backed OpenAI's powerful GPT-4 AI model, being embedded into devices starting in the coming year.

Google confidently believes that the Android smartphones will have a more advanced version of Gemini or other AI models next year.

With Gemini Nano in front of Google's current AI models, this efficient on-device tool is set to change the game for Pixel devices and other compatible Android devices. This compact model signifies a significant leap in on-device AI capabilities.

Brian Rakowski, Vice President of Product Management for Google's Pixel unit, expressed his confidence in the deployment of advanced large language models directly onto smartphones in the near future.

According to him,  there are breakthroughs in compressing these models for on-device usage which pave the way for a multitude of applications without relying on remote data centers or internet connectivity.

The Evolution of Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs), such as Gemini Ultra, represent the symbol of AI sophistication, boasting a staggering 1.56 trillion parameters, per CNBC. These models excel at understanding and generating human-like language, offering immense potential for various industries and applications.

Paving the Way for a Smartphone Revolution

In light of declining smartphone sales, industry players are banking on AI to catalyze a much-anticipated "supercycle" in the smartphone market. While analysts remain cautious about the timeline for such a surge, smartphone manufacturers are ramping up their investments in AI-driven innovations to reignite consumer interest.

Companies like Humane, Rabbit, and Meizu are exploring unconventional smartphone designs optimized for AI-driven functionalities, envisioning a future where devices are more compact and seamlessly integrated into daily life.

"Unfortunately, we don't expect that boom. The last supercycle we saw was between 2010 and 2015, where in five years the market grew five times from around 300 million smartphones per year to 1.5 billion," Francisco Jeronimo, vice president of data and analytics at research firm IDC, told CNBC.

Google's AI Ambitions

Google's strategic focus on AI shows its commitment to innovation and market leadership. Recent developments, including the rebranding of Bard to Gemini and the expansion of AI-powered features across platforms, demonstrate Google's relentless pursuit of AI-driven excellence.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai reiterated the company's dedication to AI during a recent earnings call, emphasizing Google's vision of an AI agent capable of performing diverse tasks within its ecosystem.

Similar sentiments have been echoed by executives across the tech industry, signaling a collective push towards AI-driven productivity tools and services.

Last week, Google paused Gemini due to the criticisms it faced. According to the reports, it posted "inaccuracies" in recognizing historical images. This is why the company wanted to bring an improved version of the AI tool.
