The cloud storage service Dropbox released for Windows Phones and tablets earlier in the year has been fine-tuned with the release of a universal app that improves its features for both mobile and tablet versions.

The new universal Windows app update adapts to the user's screen size, and includes a few new features. Windows users can now upload files that are not photos (including videos) right from their phone, and choose multiple files to upload at once. The update includes the ability to save or open files from the cloud storage service within other apps and download files directly to the device or SD card so users can access the files when offline. Windows tablet users can also select contacts when sharing folders.

According to Dropbox, the app updates available to download for free for Windows Phone 8.0 or 8.1 will have an overall better performance, making multitasking that much easier.

While Microsoft users wait for the next big updates to Windows 10, which should be available this summer, it only makes sense that Microsoft continues to sharpen its offered services to keep more companies and individuals in its ecosystem. And since cloud storage is a must in both business and personal workflows, creating a universal app seems like the smart move for the Windows and Dropbox partnership.

Separately from the announcement of the universal app release, Dropbox also announced in a blog post it will launch a new feature for viewing images for its desktop version.

With the new image viewer, users will be able to preview images online better by zooming in on JPG, PNG, BMP, Photoshop and PostScript (.eps) images — all without having to download the images first. Photoshop, Illustrator and scalable vector graphic files will also be able to be previewed in higher resolution from the browser.
