The full trailer for Alice Through The Looking Glass shows a return to Wonderland (or Underland, as it's known in this series of films), where Alice (Mia Wasikowska) must fight time itself, or a human personification of it (Sacha Baron Cohen), to save her friend, Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp).

In the trailer, recently released by Disney, Alice returns to the bright and punny world she traveled to in 2010's Alice in Wonderland, but this time everything looks dark and dreary. There, she reunites with her friends and enemies, such as the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) and Absolem (Alan Rickman). However, Mad Hatter isn't quite himself, having lost his "muchness," so the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) sends Alice on a quest to save him.

The trailer shows that Alice must fight time, but in the film, time is not a concept, but a villain, as embodied by Cohen. Alice must somehow get the Chronosphere, which will help save her friend. She travels through time, too, though, which allows her to meet Underland's characters throughout their lives.

The trailer begins with an ominous bit of narration:

"When the day becomes the night and the sky becomes the sea. When the clock strikes heavy and there's no time for tea. And in our darkest hour, before my final rhyme. She will come back home to Wonderland and turn back the hands of time."

James Bobin directed Alice Through The Looking Glass, with writer Linda Woolverton in charge of the screenplay (of course, all characters find their basis within the pages of the Alice in Wonderland series of books by Lewis Carroll). The film also features Timothy Spall and Rhys Ifans, with Helena Bonham Carter recreating her role as the Red Queen.

The original 2010 live-action Alice in Wonderland film, directed by Tim Burton, took in more than $1 billion worldwide after its release, making it the 19th highest-grossing film of all time. It won two Academy awards for Best Art Direction and Best Costume design and received a nomination for Best Visual Effects.

"I really love the character of Alice," said Wasikowska at this year's D23 Expo to Coming Soon. "I love the books and I have a deep sort of affection for her character and the other characters in the film so I feel very honored to be able to play her."

Alice Through The Looking Glass lands in theaters on May 27, 2016.
