For those of us out there that have been hoping and praying for a small novelty device that turns the iPhone flashlight into something fun and stylish, the Luma is the answer. The small acrylic attachment clips to the edge of a smartphone — though all given examples use an iPhone — and wraps around to cover the flashlight with the lamp-shaped portion.

When turned on, it provides a softer source of illumination in a wider, but shallower, arc and looks like there's a tiny lamp sitting on there. They bill the device as a night light, though it seems equally as good for any shady alcove or area with indirect light. In addition to being a light source of sorts, it can also be used to tell friends, "Hey, look at this tiny lamp I've got on my phone!" Surely there's hours of entertainment to be had here — and I'm only half-joking.

Luma was created in collaboration between Israel-based Peleg Design and the Holon Institute of Technology. If that collaboration seems a bit odd, it's worth noting that Peleg Design founder Shahar Peleg earned a Bachelor of Arts in Design and Interior Architecture from HIT. However, how small is it exactly? Try "5 x 3 x 6.2 cm" small. The small lampshade comes in gray, blue and red and clocks in at a fairly reasonable $9 total in Peleg Design's designboom shop.
