It's really not all that surprising that Marvel's second Netflix-exclusive series, Jessica Jones, is off to a strong start. Like its predecessor, the show was released late last week to rave reviews and huge viewership—simply put, Marvel has yet another hit on its hands. Considering the fact that Daredevil was renewed for a second season in less than two weeks after its premiere, fans are hopeful that Jessica Jones will receive similar treatment. Unfortunately, it may not be that easy.

Daredevil and Jessica Jones are far from Marvel's only Netflix projects: in fact, the publisher has no less than five series planned for the streaming service. Series based on Luke Cage and Iron Fist have been confirmed, with all of Netflix's Marvel series building up to an Avengers-level miniseries, The Defenders. Normally, these other series wouldn't necessarily have any impact on Jessica Jones but, according to series producer Melissa Rosenberg, that might not be the case.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rosenberg seemed confident that the first season of Jessica Jones wouldn't be the last, although it might be the only one for some time. When asked about the second season, Rosenberg made it seem as if shooting schedules were the biggest hurdle the show would have to overcome:

"The question becomes is there actual time? There are logistics involved, because Defenders has to shoot by a certain time, contractually. Actually, I'm not sure; I'm not at all involved in those conversations, much to my dismay. The first question is whether or not we will even get a second season. The second question is, if so, when? Will it be before The Defenders or after? I'd certainly love it to be before but there are things that play into that—time, availability."

Granted, there's still a lot of work to be done before The Defenders becomes a reality: the first season of Luke Cage is still in production, and Marvel's Iron Fist has barely gotten off the ground—the show's lead hasn't even been cast yet. All things considered, there's likely a few years left before The Defenders hits Netflix. The problem is that seemingly no one knows anything for sure quite yet.

Given how well Jessica Jones is doing, fans shouldn't be worried about the show's return ... it's more about how long the wait for a second season might end up being.
