Jaguar is equipping its drivers with future technology, now.

The luxury car automaker has incorporated the University of Cambridge's holographic technology into its Jaguar Land Rover vehicles via a brand-new Head-Up Display (HUD).

The display, which flashes onto a small area of the windshield, shows drivers everything from cruise control set speed to traffic sign recognition, gear position and road speed, all while offering turn-by-turn navigation as well. Although each piece of information is offered in a small dose — size wise — they're all clear in the compact holographic display, which manages to be telling, yet nonintrusive, aimed to keep drivers' eyes on the road.

"We're moving towards a fully immersive driver experience in cars and we think holographic technology could be a big part of that by providing information, or even by encouraging good driver behavior," professor Daping Chu, of Cambridge's department of engineering, said in the university's story about Jaguar using its technology.

Chu adds that this could be just the beginning of the kinds of information that a HUD could deliver via holographic technology, teasing several more potential bits that could be flashed onto drivers' windshields in the near future.

"For example — if the driver passes a petrol station, perhaps the price of petrol at that station could flash up in the corner," Chu says. "The trick is how to display the most useful information in a way that doesn't distract the driver."

Information about vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists could also be displayed on HUDs in the future, working toward making roads that much safer.
