In the latest round of casting news for the upcoming Mystery Science Theater 3000 reboot, comedian and actor Patton Oswalt has joined the line-up for the sci-fi comedy show as henchman Son of Frank (or TV's Song of TV's Frank) to Felicia Day's character Kinga Forrester, the new "Mad".

Along with Day, Oswalt is joining up with a cast of veritable talents, including comedians Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn, and new host Jonah Ray.

MST3K creator Joel Hodgson was eager to have Oswalt on the reboot, 15 years after the show went off the air.

"The idea of Patton wearing black lab assistant's garb, with a big mound of silver hair and a spit curl ...? It was just really funny to me, in a visual/cross-referential/meta kind of way," said Hodgson, who has known Oswalt for years. Hodgson also revealed the conversation that took place between the two after he asked Oswalt to sign on for the retooled version of MST3K, all of which took place via text, which the AV Club posted on its site:

Currently, Hodgson's Kickstarter campaign to bring back his well-beloved TV show has reached more than $3 million, far surpassing its original $2 million goal. The showrunner promises that if the campaign reaches $5.5 million, the production team will be able to complete a 12-episode order, as opposed to its initial 3-episode limit.

The show could premiere via online streaming and, Hodgson hopes, be filmed in front of a live studio audience if it hits the $5.5 million goal.
