Selfie fans have a new app that is waiting to be embraced - Imoji. This app enables users to convert their photos (or any image from the Internet) into a personalized sticker or emoji (i.e. the smileys or ideograms one uses in messengers or texts), which the user can send across to their pals.

The Imoji app is the brainchild of six friends who were tired of the limitations of the existing emojis. Unlike messaging apps like WhatsApp or Line, Imoji is not a standalone messaging application, but it ties in to the iMessage app for iOS. The app builds on Apple's iMessage system.

"Turn your favorite selfies, animals, and celebrities into stickers you can text. Discover what's trending or create your own. Imoji makes your texts more you," notes the app's website.

The Imoji app is iOS compatible and is pretty simple to use. All a user needs to do is sign up and select a photo from their iPhone or the web. Edit the image to your liking, altering the background with the help of the built-in crop, trim and zoom tools. Save the image and the Imoji app converts it into a personalized sticker, which is ready to be sent out as a text message.

Imoji has been released by its developers as a free iOS app on July 24. The app was tested by 100 "content creators" before its launch and boasts "multiple thousands" of stickers.

"Emojis are great at communicating an emotion or tone in a text message so they will continue to play a part in the way people communicate. Where we think things are heading is a more flexible and creative form of communication, one which adds a new dimension to a text message. We've designed Imoji to be just that," revealed Tom Smith, one of Imoji's six founding members, in an interview.

Users who are worried about privacy need not worry as they have the option of making their images private and not public.

Imoji app is set to introduce newer features in the future that will build on the existing basic profiles. Moreover, the company also anticipates "a business model where some of the emoji in its database could be sponsored."
