Lexus put its 2016 NX on ice ... literally.

Lexus United Kingdom tabbed ice-sculpting experts Hamilton Ice Sculptors to create customized ice tires for the NX in a cool concept that puts the emphasis on "cool."

However, this was more than just a publicity stunt to capture on video for people to enjoy on YouTube. There was a deeper meaning as to why Lexus commissioned this frigid project, which took three months from start to finish.

"The challenge was two-fold: how to recreate the Lexus five-twin-spoke alloy wheel and its Yokohama winter tire with incredible precision, while also making a wheel and tire that would support the NX's 2.2-ton mass," Lexus UK wrote in the description, accompanying the video of the process on its YouTube account.

The hand-sculpted tires were made from what Lexus UK refers to as "optically perfect, crystal-clear ice," which endured a five-day deep freeze at -30 degrees Celsius that left it covered with a thick layer of ice.

Once they were removed from the deep freeze, the tires were mounted onto a frozen Lexus hybrid, ready to drive on ice for the first time. Lexus UK says Hamilton Ice Sculptors use every advanced technique, from laser-scanning to 3D computer-aided design and multi-axis machines to develop and deliver the tires, before using hand-made tools to add extra detail.

"Part engineering, part art, this unique project came together to prove that anything is possible with the right combination of desire, skill and dedication," Lexus UK wrote.

The video actually shows the Lexus driving slowly on its ice tires. Tech Times would call that a success.
