JBL has announced a new set of wireless earbuds, called the Everest Elite 100, which offers something that other companies haven't really offered before — customizable active noise cancellation.

Active noise cancellation is a big drain on battery life, so to counter that, JBL has added a U-shaped neck rest with a battery in it. So, the device isn't totally wireless, and it has a big battery that rests on the back of the user's neck. It's certainly not the most attractive device around, but it would be worse if the battery lasted an hour.

While other noise-canceling headphones either cancel noise or don't cancel noise, JBL's set allows users to dial noises up or down in their audio mix using the accompanying JBL app. For example, users can turn down particularly distracting frequencies, which might change depending on where the user is, or turn up noises that they need to hear, like traffic.

JBL has used this technology in some of its larger pairs of headphones, but this is the first time that it has used it on any earbuds. In fact, according to JBL, the company is the first to put active noise cancellation in earbuds.

Apart from the battery and active noise-cancellation technology, the earbuds are similar to the standard Everest 100 headphones.

The JBL Everest Elite 100 earbuds will cost $199, and will go on sale in "early 2016," according to JBL.
